The words on eSIM plan pages decide what you get for your money. Here they are in plain language, with the Thailand details that matter.
eSIM
A SIM profile stored on a chip inside the phone. It is installed by QR code or app instead of inserting a plastic card.
Travel eSIM
A data plan for use abroad, usually without a local phone number. All the providers on our board sell data-only Thailand plans.
Validity
How many days a plan can be used once it starts, for example 30 days or 180 days.
Activation window
How long you can wait between buying and first use. TonMobile allows 180 days; Ubigi allows six months.
Smartstart
Ubigi's name for starting a plan's validity when you arrive in the destination country.
Unlimited pass
A plan priced by days with no total data cap, usually with a daily full-speed allowance before speeds drop.
Daily allowance
Full-speed data per day on an unlimited pass. TonMobile lists 1 GB a day, then 512 kbps; Saily lists 5 GB a day, then up to 1 Mbps.
Fair usage policy
A rule that lets a carrier slow speeds after heavy use. Holafly and the Thai tourist SIMs mention one.
Hotspot
Sharing the phone's data with a laptop or tablet. Holafly caps it at 500 MB a day; Saily lists it as unrestricted.
Data roaming
The setting that lets a foreign line use a local network. It must be on for a travel eSIM line in Thailand.
Carrier lock
A restriction that ties a phone to one carrier. On iPhone, "No SIM restrictions" in About means the phone is unlocked.
EID
The unique identifier of the eSIM chip in a phone, shown in the device information screen.
Top-up
Adding data to an installed eSIM without a new profile. TonMobile and Ubigi support top-ups in their apps.
AIS, dtac, TrueMove H
Thailand's three main mobile networks, measured by Opensignal in its August 2026 report.
Tourist SIM
A physical prepaid SIM for visitors, sold at airport kiosks and shops and registered to your passport.
TDAC
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card, required for foreign visitors since May 1, 2025, submitted free within 72 hours before arrival.
